First there’s Staging

Welcome to my blog. This is my first time doing this, so it may be a little slow at the beginning, but I think two years gives me a good amount of time to hone my writing. Please respond and let me know any questions you have or more information you want. Enjoy and thanks for following my journey.

We just completed our first day of Staging. There are 74 volunteers going to Kazakhstan, roughly 50 in English teaching and around 25 in the organizational development program, in which I’m participating. Today we reviewed basic introductory material of Peace Corps as a whole; discussing our goals, anxieties, and the foundational information. Tomorrow we do more of this and go into more detail a number of important things to know before we leave.

The group seems outstanding. Everyone has been very friendly and out-going. I was just picking up names when we finished for the day and then everyone went back to their rooms to change and it threw me off. I think by the end of the three months together, I’ll be able to connect each face with a name. Leaving my family today was probably one of the most difficult things I’ve done but now it just seems surreal. I’m incredibly excited to start the work and arrive in country, but even now, together with the other volunteers and reviewing information, it still hasn’t hit. Maybe it’s because we’re in a city where I spent so much of this year, or because I can still see friends from home and relatives, but even though I know I’ll be leaving the country tomorrow for two-plus years, it’s still slightly unreal.

I’m ready though. We’ve been talking about this day for so long and finally being able to say that tomorrow I leave is immensely rewarding, and very soon. I may not have Internet access for a while or on a regular basis, but I will try to keep this updated as often as possible. Thank you all for your kind wishes and I can’t wait to hear from you all and let you know how and what I’m doing.
